Position Overview: The Medical Billing and Coding Specialist will ensure accurate and timely submission of medical claims to insurance companies. This role involves coding procedures, diagnoses, and services using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes, following up on outstanding claims, verifying insurance coverage, and handling any billing-related inquiries. We use AthenaOne software and have a strong preference for candidates with Athena experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accurately assign ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes to diagnoses and procedures based on medical documentation.
- Ensure compliance with medical billing and coding regulations, including HIPAA.
- Prepare and submit claims to insurance companies, Medicare, and Medicaid.
- Review and appeal unpaid and denied claims.
- Verify insurance coverage and eligibility for services.
- Work with healthcare providers and patients to resolve billing and coding discrepancies.
- Maintain detailed records of patient billing and coding information.
- Ensure timely follow-up on outstanding claims and payment collections.
- Assist in generating financial reports related to billing and coding.
- Stay updated on changes in coding and billing regulations.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; associate’s degree in a related field preferred.
- Certification in medical billing and coding (e.g., CPC, CCS, CCA) is required.
- Minimum of [X] years of experience in medical billing and coding.
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical billing software (e.g., [insert specific software if applicable]).
